Velenje castle, one of the best kept castles in Slovenia, towers this town which boasts modern architecture. The castle is home to Velenje Museum, which has more than ten permanent and temporary exhibitions. The castle hike route can take you to three other castles in Velenje's vicinity. One of these - Šalek castle - is unique in Slovenia thanks to its triangular shape.
While in Velenje, you can descend to the depths of the mysterious underground world of the Slovenian Coal Museum. Those more interested in nature, sports and recreation will be impressed by the Velenje and Šalek lake and their surroundings. Although the lakes are a result of coal excavation, today they are a true paradise for hikers, bikers, joggers, water sports enthusiasts, fishers.
The main town square is the home of the largest statute of Marshall Tito in the world, Avgustinčič's memorial to a pensive Tito. The statue is 10 metres high and is a larger example of the statute in Tito's birthplace of Kumrovec.
Velenje's creativity, youthful energy and blossoming ideas can be felt at its many events. Every year, more than 1,500 are organised. The largest children's festival in Slovenia - Pika's festival - is especially cherished among the traditional events. Every year in September, it ensures a healthy amount of fun in the town.
Velenje offers both its inhabitants and visitors safe, comfortable and environmentally friendly transport. Feel free to use the LOKALC free-of-charge town bus or rent a bike for free.
Even though Velenje is a modern town, it is situated alongside picturesque rural surroundings. Its active tourist societies ensure the hiking paths and natural & cultural heritage are well maintained, and practice traditional Slovenian cuisine. The "Gril's farmhouse" organic museum and herb garden in Lipje, and the "Kavčnik house" in Zadovdnje are especially worthy of mention. The tourist societies maintain a lively schedule of traditional events all year round.
The white fairytale castle still sits at top of a hill just above the town, now housing several unique exhibitions, and several interesting rural museums attest to the fact that Velenje's past has not been forgoten. We always think od Velenje as the city of flowers and art, with the former bringing colour to virtualy every street and square in the city, and plenty of public art on display everywhere you look. Most attractions and venues in the city are also easily accesible to disabled and elderly visitors.
